The Civil War was a battle of great importance to our history of the United States. On April 12th, 1861 this battle broke out between the Union States, North, and the Confederate States, such as the South. The Civil War took place all throughout the United states, and did not come to an end until the Union won the war on May 9, 1856. So, our question of “What caused the Civil War”, comes with three important answers. The three main causes of the Civil War between the North and the South were Economic, Social, and Political differences.
.The Civil War changed the country in many ways. Thousands of men on both sides died during the Civil War. “The Union Army lost 352, 528 men and the Confederate Army lost 258,000 men” (Doc F). Innovative ways to fight came about during the Civil War.
The Southern states utilized slaves to work their large plantations and to perform other work. Oftentimes, slaves were traded, rented, or sold to pay off debts, thus being treated like objects or property by the slaveowners (Document G). This demonstrates how the slaves dealt with injustice and discrimination while under the white man 's control. Although the Union disagreed with the Confederacy’s use of slavery, 12% of slaves lived in the border states of the North and the South (Document B). While the North had no slaves, the South owned 3,500,000.
The civil war began in the year of 1861, many historians have established theories for the main cause. Four of the possible theories include, morality and views on slavery, two societies, failure to compromise, states rights and Lincoln's election. Although all of these play a big role in the causes of the civil war, I believe the principle cause of the civil war was, the existence of two societies in the United States beacuse the South wanted to become more independent, had multiple uprisings due to slavery, and had differnt oppions on slavery. America was split into the North and the South, both very diverse. Some might say that the North was very independent and the south was very dependent on the north.

The reason why the United States fought in a Civil War was due to the North and the South not being able to reach an agreement on which states should become slave states, and which would remain free states. This Disagreement was caused by the United States gaining several new states and territories from the Mexican-American war. Therefore, it was only a matter of time until these two vastly different societies controlled by a single federal government, would clash. While the economy wasn’t in bad shape, the North and South were different and had very different views and ideas about their futures. The Northern area couldn 't have huge farms like the South. However, they were very diverse in the items they wanted to produce.
