In the novel Insurgent Mexico, John Reed travels south of the border to experience the Mexican Revolution first hand while traveling in the year 1914. Reed was a journalist writing for Metropolitan and was ordered to bring back his work to publish in the United States. During this time Reed travelled to many places and met all different types of people from war generals, to peones, to Indians and many others. Reed has described his time in Mexico as the “most satisfactory period” in his life (Publisher’s Note), and it can be reflected through the stories he shares in Insurgent Mexico about his traveling companions and his experiences. Some moments were very serious, and at times even dangerous, while others were light hearted and amusing for
Mexico and Cuba underwent major revolutions led by rebels who opposed their current presidents. The revolutionaries in both countries were mainly concerned with the industrialization and modernization that was occurring within their countries. The uprisings resulted in the countries shared beliefs against foreign imperialism, against elites having so much control on their counties and push for land reforms. In the long run Mexico faired better after their revolution than Cuba. Cuba still experiences hostile tensions with the U.S. today and still practices rationing.
The Mexican-American War marked an enormous symbolic impact for both nations which changed people’s lives. There’s many similarities and differences between these two countries, the combat that began during 1846 between Mexicans and Americans has brought catastrophe and teared many families apart. The war commenced because Mexico claimed the Nueces River and its northeastern boarder while Americans demanded the Rio Grande River. Overall they had problems with land property, Mexico started the battle first and launch fire on April 25, 1846. This is when all the problems and fight’s begin and how Mexican’s and American’s became great enemies that can’t stand each other.
People take many risks to get medical help in places that aren't safe. Four men were kidnapped on their way to go to a clinic in Mexico. The reality of crime and kidnapping in Mexico is cruel. That was an experience that Washington McGee, Zindell Brown, Shaeed Woodard and Eric from the article `Mexico Tragedy Reveals Reality” by Jill Filipovic went through a harsh and upsetting kidnapping. The four men wanted to go to Mexico because one of their close friends told them the medical help there would be cheaper.
“Mexico attacks U.S territory, sixteen Americans were either wounded or killed” read the headlines on U.S weekly. After winning their independence from Mexico, Texas wanted to become a part of the U.S.A and not be an independent country anymore. Mexico did not like this, thinking it was their territory because of the agreement they made with the Texans in 1821. This agreement said that American settlers could move into Texas for a cheap price but they had to convert to Christianity and had to follow the rules of the Mexican government. The Texans did this for a little bit but then wanted their independence to become a new, free country.
Cuba and Mexico share more than just language and existing in what some call Latin America, they are brothers that were raised by the same family, but after coming of age and leaving home they went in very different directions. Cuba and Mexico both experienced the extended struggle to become independent nations and each was forced into a bloody revolution by a different set of circumstances. THE FATHER, THE SON, AND LA CHINGADA: THE TRINITY OF THE CONQUEST ‘Lo Mexicano’ is a phrase-turned-concept in 20th century Mexican philosophy. The term literally translates to “the Mexican,” however, it is also used to superficially describe the identity of the Mexican individual. The notion came about after the revolution; the phrase was meant to emphasize and unite Mexico as an independent people. Today, the phrase is understood as an all encompassing term for “mexicanness,” or that which makes someone a true mexican.
Up until the 1960s Anglo social scientists wrote most of the literature about the people of Mexican- descent in the United States. Their analysis of Mexican American culture and history reflected the hegemonic beliefs, values, and perceptions of their society. As outsiders, Anglo scholars were led by their own biases and viewed Mexicans as inferior, savage, unworthy and different. Because Mexican scholars had not yet begun to write about their own experiences, these stereotypes were legitimized and reproduced in the literature. However, during the mid- 1960s scholars such as Octavio Ignacio Romano, Nick Vaca, Francisco Armando Rios, and Ralph Ricatelli began to reevaluate the literature written by their predecessors.
Historians often divide the Mexican Revolution into three main periods of fighting due to its length and complexity. Of the three periods, the one that had the most impact on Mexican society at the time was the first phase in which Francisco Madero overthrew Porfirio Diaz as new revolutionary leaders such as Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa arose. This period allowed people that were not usually involved in politics to become more involved. The phase of the revolution that had the most potential to create change in Mexican society later was the third one that saw Conventionalists take on Constitutionalists for control of the country. This stage created the Constitution and led to a single political party gaining control of México.
There are many themes present in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, ranging from commentary on the world as a whole, to the simple fraternity of male friendship. Even though all the themes found in the book are all important, and without them the book wouldn’t be what it is, one of them stands out from the rest, a bright and shiny rock in the bottom of a lake bed. This raw uncut gem among the jewels is the raw uncut emotion of loneliness. the deep insistent yearning for human companionship. The need to interact with people is one of the prime reasons many of the situations that happen, happen in the first place.
Mexican American War “... May the boldest fear and the wisest tremble when incurring responsibilities on which may depend on our countries peace and prosperity…” -James K. Polk. What our 11th president meant by this is that we need to maintain good relations to bring success as this is the opposite of what Mexico wanted. In 1845, many Americans believed in manifest destiny which was the belief that the United States was destined to stretch from coast to coast. As this idea scattered through America, citizens of the U.S. spread with it.
The American, Mexican, and French revolutions were similar and different in their own ways. There was a common cause, goal, and effect of each of these three revolutions in addition to the unique causes, goals, and effects. All of these revolutions were caused by political instability, had the common goal of political reformation that was met through revolutionary events, that resulted in the formation and adoption of a new constitution and form of government. There were many causes that led up to these three revolutions, some are shared by all three, some only by two, and some are unique causes. All three of these revolutions were caused by political instability in the country these revolutions took place in.
Las Vegas is where I was born and raised. That doesn’t mean that I just gave up on my Mexican culture. Like many others, I have a culture that is both American and Mexican. My culture has shaped my values, perceptions, and behaviors. The culture of my family, community, and society has made who I am as a person in numerous ways.
I’m the first generation of my family to be Mexican -American, but I have been introduced to the Mexican culture since I was born. I appreciate the difficulties my parents have faced to make me the person that I am today even though I wasn’t born in Mexico my parents have taught me the language and the culture which I’m so proud of being part of. For others being Hispanic is actually being born in any Latin American countries which is not true at all. Being Hispanic is much more than my cultural background it actually describes how much I appreciate my culture and how I get to experience things other people don’t. I fit into the Hispanic community through the experiencing the culture first hand ,participating in traditions and planning to include my culture in my future.
Religion is big in Mexico and according to gobalsecurity an online article, 88% of the population identified themselves as Roman Catholicism and 5 % of the population identified themselves as Protestants and Evangelicals. The values of the Mexican people are always around the family. Families are usually large in Mexico and are very conscious of the responsibilities to immediate family members and extended family such as cousins and even close friends. Whenever Mexicans host parties, they make visitors feel welcomed and comfortable which is a large part of the customs and values of the country. The Mexican people believe that any important decision within the family should be taken after all members in the family had their voice heard.
