The Mayans’ greatest achievement was neither developing a calendar, nor establishing a complex trade system- but rather, the building of their gigantic cities. But what defines excellency? The answer can be categorized into four sections: significance, scale, genius, and effort. Before the arrival of Columbus in the Americas, there were several Mesoamerican civilizations throughout a period of thousands of years. Many of these civilizations attained remarkable accomplishments in fields, ranging all the way from mathematics to agriculture. In example, one renowned civilization, the Maya, developed a complex system of written language that enabled them to keep record of significant events. The Maya and Cherokee colonialism is the “policy or practice of acquiring full, or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.” Both the Maya and Cherokee indigenous people had similar colonial experience involving different wars, and disease of their lands. The Maya colonial period was from 1520’s-1821. Cindy L. Hull continues her ethnography by explaining the economic structure of the Mayan people after the fall of henequen. She noted that within her research, she viewed the adaptations of the people as a great way to "emphasize the flexibility and resourcefulness" of the people (pg. 23). With the decline of the henequen production, the people had to resort to incorporate other forms of labor to provide for their families. As the book states, their families became "agents of both change and resistance" in order to continue living good lives (pg. 23). The main source of labor derived from agriculture.
The Maya civilization flourished in Mesoamerica, a region that includes the current territories of Southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and western Honduras. It is divided in three periods: Pre-Classic (2,000 B.C.), Classic (250-900 A.D.), and Post-Classic (900-1500 A.D.). Of these periods, the Classic is the most well-known and the one where the Maya reached the apotheosis. It witnessed the peak of large-scale construction and urbanism, the recording of monumental inscriptions, and a period of significant intellectual and artistic development. See MICHAEL D. COE, THE MAYA (6th ed.1999).
In AD 1839, 2 people by the name of John Lloyd and Frederick Catherwood found city named Maya hidden behind trees and vines. Ethos appeal to ethics and in this article, it is apparent that Mark Twain lost all credibility when he said that he was in deed a scientist. Once you read through the essay you quickly realize that it is written on a metaphorical foundation. Stereotyping every citizen as harsh, irrational and gluttonous. The comparison that Twain uses to illustrate his stances on the matter is the sport of hunting buffalo. Twain describes how man killed seventy-two buffalo for sport and left seventy-one to rot.
