This month’s SSR book I read was The Maze Runner. The publisher of this book is Random House and the copyright date is 2009. There are 375 pages in the book. The story is about a group of teenagers in a dystopian society. They don’t know who sent them or why they are here. A giant Maze surrounds them and they must work together to solve the maze to escape. The author’s purpose is to entertain his readers and give them the imagination of this story. He was inspired by Ender’s Game and Lord of the Flies. The theme of this book is to work together and never give up, even when all hope is lost. They must persevere and remain strong as one. He can’t remember anything, only knowing his name. He finds himself surrounded by teenage boys. Some of them helped him while others teased him. The second main event is Thomas runs into the Maze when his friends are trapped. Minho and Alby, who was stung, are stuck in the Maze with only a few seconds left until the gates closed. Thomas rushes into the Maze, not thinking about the consequences. Thomas and Minho hid Alby in the vines while they ran to avoid the Grievers. Miraculously, they make it through the night. The third event is the Grievers arrive in the village when the gates don’t close. Everyone was in a panic, rushing to barricade the gates and handing supplies to everybody. Everyone is overwhelmed with fear and confusion. In the silence Grievers are heard from outside and suddenly Gally bursts in, screaming at Thomas. He yells at them and tries to tear the building open. A Griever abruptly breaks in, taking Gally, and retreats back into the Maze. It described everything really well. It left suspense at the end of the book, making you wanting to read more. It did really well at giving you a visual experience. I was able to see everything they described. It was also very powerful. The story tells of their friendship and trustworthiness towards each other. It tells how they got along and about their hardships and troubles. This is really powerful to me because it inspires me to be like the characters in here and never give up, even when all hope is lost. The novel also has a dark aspect in its writing. It describes a dystopian society with everything in oblivion. The writing described the deaths and the Grievers very well to give you a hint of how it felt in the Glade. My overall response to the book is it was very interesting and even-paced. It was very interesting, giving you a cliff hanger at the very end of the book. The story has an amazing plot that isn’t too fast or too slow. All the events blend very well together. Throughout the story, you discover more about the characters and who they are. For example, all the secrets about the Maze and who set them are discovered everywhere throughout the book, giving hints and glimpses in the middle, and revealing the big conclusion at the end. It has the right amount of adventure, surprise, and darkness in it. It has two great topics, dystopia and survival, blended into one to create a magnificent story. I absolutely
