The Modern Gang: A Normative Critique A gang can act as a primary unit for a young person. They are a close group who all have proven that they want to be in the gang and have shown that they will do anything for the gang they act as a close-knit community. By going through the beat-in or the rape-in, which is the case for many women and young girls who wish to join you prove that you are willing to endure anything for the gang and that you have the tenacity to survive in their world. While not necessarily the same in from, they are generally very similar in function. One of the best examples of this is security and protection gang members feel safe even though they are likely in more danger. but because gang members are not supposed to show fear they numb themselves to it and are eventually not afraid of victimization. Gang members also have the opportunity to make a lot of money. Some even join to support their families with said money. A gang is not composed of only people with poor family lives and low economic status as can be inferred from the fact that there are so many young gang members and that there is gang activity in relatively wealthy areas, while poverty is one of the driving forces in large metro areas like Chicago. Another parallel would be the connection between members, it is almost like a brotherhood they do in away care for all the members. This can be seen in retaliatory attacks made by gangs after one of their members is killed. This does not mean it is exactly the same though, certain gangs like the MS-13 have a join for life situation unlike with a real family if you try to leave the gang they kill you, unfortunately I have also come across many stories like this. A gang will teach you a different set of morals and values they will teach you to survive and do whatever it takes to keep on living.
