In chapter 21 of a long way gone, Ishmael Beah through the use of symbolism, demonstrates how in times of manipulation one may sacrifice everything for the greater good: “if you shoot me, your mother will die, and if you don’t, your father will die.” (p. 217 lines 25-26). This line symbolizes the monkey is an object of manipulation through the act of making innocent hunters decide between two great acts of evil. The Monkey also symbolizes the greater evil which is the military regime that controls Sierra Leone. The diction of this statement also suggests that evil in any form may use deception to overcome their opponents, and force them to weigh an impossible dilemma.
