The tone and the atmosphere of the play is cynical in a woe is me sort of way, The three main characters of the play, the sisters, are well educated and had the ability to pursue whatever they want to in life , but they instead of acting and pursue those dreams of going to Moscow someday , they just spend the entire play talking about it. They do not ever actually go to Moscow they just daydream about that eventual return. Chekhov makes there dreams just that, just dreams, and nothing else. If Chekhov were to have the main characters in the play achieve their dreams then the new reality would be boring.
