Straight Outta Compton, a film reflecting on the gang violence, crime and police harassment that N.W.A (Niggaz Wit Attitude) and other African Americans encountered on a daily basis, directly hits the issues that blacks go through in society. This movie was one of the most controversial films of 2015. It hits head on with the social inequalities and racism that took place after Civil Rights’ movements and some things that are still happening today. Even though Straight Outta Compton is a movie mainly about how gangsta rap music came about, most of the songs that this group wrote was inspired by issues in society. Straight Outta Compton did not appeal too many of the viewers, but it is hands down one of the best musical films that I have ever seen. It portrays the human race far from the “American Dreamers”, where actual art flourishes, despite the discrimination, violence and harassment that African Americans went through. F. Gary Gray’s film displays an eagerness to connect with the basic thematic question of the N.W.A. narrative. How else was one supposed to respond to the figures that were behaving in the utterly illegitimate manner? The inexcusable police harassment that the N.W.A. members faced throughout the start, middle and end of their career just struck me right in my chest and made me realize that it was not easy living as a minority in this country.
