Four days ago, on the island referred to by sailors as “Ship-trap Island,” a man became motivated to play a game. That man was Sanger Rainsford. He had to evade the great hunter and trapper known as General Zaroff. Following the events on the island, Rainsford was the only player left alive. Having only the clothes on his back, food, and a knife, surviving would be incredibly difficult for Mr. Rainsford.
The Most Dangerous Game is a story that discusses the inner capability to humans to perform acts of extreme violence. It observes two different, yet similar characters in General Zaroff and Rainsford. They both have very similar views on hunting, as they both consider the feelings of the prey to be meaningless. However, the stark difference between the two characters is the General Zaroff hunts humans and Rainsford hunts big game. Connell made sure to write this similarity into the story for the sake of foreshadowing.
“No animal had a chance with me... I had to invent a new animal” (7), General Zaroff brags to the captivated Rainsford in Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game.” At the heart of the story is a fight for survival: winner takes all and survival of the fittest. General Zaroff’s perverse thinking creates a need in the reader to find out how the plot will unfold. The author’s use of suspend disbelief and imagery create anticipation in the story.
Rainsford, in this situation, displayed a smile to show he wasn't the enemy nor was he fearful. She was stuck in the household of her evil stepmother, and was not allowed to leave her home. Cinderella wanted to attend a ball; however, her stepmother would not let her go.
In The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, Rainsford says, “The world is made up of two classes-the hunters and the huntees.” This quote shows than Rainsford believes that human life is clearly more valuable than animal life. This is also shown when he says, “Hunting? Great guns, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder.” He says this in response to finding out that Zaroff hunts humans.
He had to fight himself to stay on track. He was so scared in the jungle while the General was trying to hunt him. On page 186, it says “He could not say where he was. That was suicide.” This shows the reader that Rainsford may be thinking of what could go wrong, and is not thinking on the positive side of things.
The Most Dangerous Game Conflicts All stories have to have a conflict, the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell has three important conflicts. Man against man, man against nature, man against himself are the three main conflicts that take place. For man against man Rainsford and General Zaroff are fighting each other in the hunting ‘game’. For man against nature Rainsford is fighting the sea once he hears the gunshots and is trying to get out of the water.
Not only was rainsford in a conflict with General Zaroff he is in conflict with himself as he is finding his way to Ship Trap Island. “‘I must keep my nerve, I must keep my nerve,’ he said through tight teeth” (12). Rainsford also had a conflict with himself on the island when he was deciding what to do to get away from Zaroff. Rainsford was able to overcome the internal conflict when the dogs were chasing him and he needed to make the decision to jump into the water, fight the dogs, or climb a tree and hide. Man versus himself is very important to Connell’s story.
In “The most dangerous game” written by, Richard Connell, he uses many devices such as: characterization, plot structure and theme to contribute to the overall meaning of the story. Characterization is a big part of the overall meaning of the story which is that survival is of those who are smart, cunning, and can adapt to their environment. The protagonist Rainsford is at a constant battle with the antagonist General Zaroff. Throughout the entire short story they both have similar minds sets and then farther along the main character 's mind set develops into something more. The reader can almost sense a self centeredness, and that he believes that there are only two type of people in this world, “the hunters and the huntees”, and he believes that he is the hunter.
But we should also never underestimate ourselves and never hold ourselves back. Rainsford represents the part of us, focused and does not give up on his goal because it is to difficult. Although General Zaroff represents the dark or extreme side of us, not showing pity towards others, becoming lazy, and inferring Rainsford has died therefore not caring about his
