The play Romeo and Juliet is known by many people. However, how many people understand the words in the last lines of the play. In the play’s final lines, the Prince promised that “Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished.” This quote means some people will be be affected by the death of Romeo and Juliet. More importantly the speech was directed at those responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. Those characters are Mercutio, Tybalt, Friar Laurence, Balthasar, the Apothecary, Capulet, Montague, and Friar John. Friar Laurence help kill Romeo and Juliet by marrying them together. Friar Lawrence believed the marriage could, “turn [the] households’ rancor to pure love” (Shakespeare 2.4.96). The marriage did end the feud, but at the cost of the lover life. Another way he is responsible is when Juliet comes for help. Friar Laurence told Juliet, “Take thou this vial … Like death when he shuts up the day of life” (Shakespeare 4.1.95-103). Friar Laurence intention was good but, giving Juliet a potion that make her look dead that was terrible idea. After giving Juliet the potion he had Friar John deliver a message to Romeo. However Friar John failed to delivered the letter told Friar Laurence that, “[Searchers] suspecting that we both were in a house / Where the infectious pestilence … would not let us forth” (Shakespeare 5.2.8-11). Balthasar gave news to Romeo without knowing all the facts first. Balthasar delivered the news about Juliet’s death saying, “Her body sleeps in Capel’s monument. (Shakespeare 5.1.18). Balthasar should have thought things through. The apothecary should have never sold the poison to Romeo. If the apothecary had not done this Romeo would have not die. The two main characters that caused the lover’s death are Capulet and Montague. Capulets and the Montagues hated each over a feud that happened a long time ago. So when Romeo wanted to marry Juliet he had to do it secretly. Juliet went to Friar Laurence for help because of her father.
