The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet — written by William Shakespeare along with many other plays in the 1590s. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy between two star crossed lovers who end up both dying in the end. Friar Lawrence, a cleric, tries getting the young couple together in secrecy,but leads them to their own doom. Friar Lawrence is most responsible for Romeo and Juliet's death due to him marrying them, sending an unreliable messenger, and running away instead of helping Juliet. To begin Friar Lawrence married the young couple by saying “So smile the heavens upon this holy act That after-hours with sorrow chide us not”(6.1 1-2). This was a dilemma because their families are enemies so they had to keep it a secret. In addition, Friar Lawrence also married this couple illegally. Friar Lawrence and Juliet had made a plan so she could see Romeo since he had gotten banished the plan was “In the meantime, against thou shalt awake,Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift,And hither shall he come, and he and I Will watch thy waking, and that very night Shall Romeo bear thee hence to Mantua” (4.1 115-119). The messenger that was sent was Friar John. Friar John was supposed to give a letter to Romeo to let him know the plan but this plan was never executed. Friar John says to friar Lawrence “I could not send it—here it is again—Returning the letter. Nor get a messenger to bring it thee, So fearful were they of infection”(5.2 14-15).
