The movie I chose was "As Good As It Gets" starring Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt, it's about a man named Melvin, a misanthrope, who struggles with Anxiety and Personality disorders.

What mental disorder was illustrated in this film?

The main character Melvin, I believe had Antisocial Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Obsessive –Compulsive Personality disorder and Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), although I would add racism/homophobia but I'm not sure if that’s an official "psychological disorder" yet.

Did the person meet the accepted criteria for “abnormal” in this portrayal?

Melvin showed all the signs for "abnormal" with his obsessions and compulsions he was extremely narcissistic and selfish, but the more Melvin gets to truly know the people around him, he changes, not exactly a dramatic change but just little changes like taking medication for his disorders and engaging with his neighbors. …show more content…

Melvin showed al the signs of being anti-social because he was a writer and did not want to be bothered by people, he showed his narcissistic side by being very selfish, he really thought the world revolved around him with no concern for his neighbors or the people who waited on him at the restaurant. His obsessions and compulsions were shown a lot throughout the movie, especially in the beginning when he had to turn the light switch so many times or lock his door repeatedly and then wash his hands with scalding hot water and two brand new bars of soap.

Which aspects of this film were realistic? Which ones were not? How could the character have portrayed this disorder more
