Citation: Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District (1969) Facts: In Des Moines, Iowa, a group of individuals met at a home to discuss ways to protest the United States involvement in the Vietnam War. The group decided beginning on December 16th and lasting until New Year’s Day, the members of the group would fast and wear black armbands to show their opposition to the war. School officials became aware of the students’ protest and implemented a policy that any student wearing a black armband would be asked to remove it. If the students did not remove the armband, then the student would be suspended.

In the article " The Women Of Hidden Figures". By jessica McBirney, the women of color who worked as "computers" for NACA are highlighted. Specifically, the text gave the reader a glimpse of theses ladies past. The author explained the trials and tribulations of getting an education as a black woman. Because of the harsh discrimination on their gender and race.
An example of this in the movie is when the U.S had resisted using black men as pilots but, because of an ongoing pending lawsuit decided to create a segregated unit for blacks only. In the movie a white air man talks about how the Tuskegee Airman has never lost any to enemy aircraft any bomber they had escorted. By integrating the U.S. Army Air Corps much more productivity was shown. By changing things such as incorporating black pilots and sending them to fly and fight changed WII dramatically. Tuskegee Airman paved the way for future pilots and helped increase productivity in the U.S. Army Air
Looking at the modern office there are many “glass ceilings” that Steele refers to not only apply to minorities but to genders in general. Some bosses may stop people from being promoted because they are intimidated by women and do not think they should be placed on the same level as themselves, even though they are equally qualified for the position. Steele also talks about how a misused privileged can turn out to be a disadvantage such as the concept of welfare, because people use it to their advantage so much that it become a crutch for the rest of their lives. Wiley addresses a more individual process of failing to meet educational standards hence; “You get ballplayers who could barely form a compound sentence to keep a dog off them.” This statement is still true to this day due to the fact that so many people get accepted on full ride sports scholarships but their academics are below par, so that if something happens that keeps them from competing in sports they can not afford to stay in college nor can they keep their grades
You might not know the day of August 26,1918 (Biography.com) it was a day that changed history forever. Despite racism and segregation, Katherine Johnson was the first African American woman to assist the apollo team at NASA. Johnson overcame obstacles through her life for her to get to such a place. She was a monumental piece of history. To fully understand what she accomplished one must know about her early life, rise to fame, and her greatest legacy.
There have been many stories about discrimination. It has affected people of color. Those stories explained how uneasy it can be for outsiders. Stories like that have had an impact on society. Two stories that are an example of that are “Black Men and Public Space” by Brent Staples and “The F Word” by Firoozeh Dumas.
Though, I noticed it did not matter the race or gender of the person it only mattered if you had heart problems or a family history of cancer. “This film is a reflection of discrimination in the work environment, and the things you need to do in order to gain access to the career you want”. The storyline presents a strong message that race, class, and gender play significant roles in society. Some believe that everyone is judged based on these three factors. Many think this should not be the case, but do you honestly want an airline pilot with a major heart problem to fly you across the Atlantic Ocean?
Hidden Figures is a film that tells the story of three African American women who played essential roles at NASA during the 1960s. Katherine, the main character, is a scientist at NASA working to do the math required to launch a rocket into space. She struggles because as an African American woman trying to get people to give her the respect she deserves. Many scenes show the hardships that she had to go through in order through a normal day. This essay will be exploring three main communication concepts found in the film:
Southern University’s Founders’ Day Dr. Mae C. Jemison Speech Dr. Mae Jemison is the first African American woman to go to space. Currently, she works with National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. On March 9, 2016, she gave a brilliant speech to everybody present in the F.G Clark Activity center at Southern University on the occasion of the 136th Southern University Founders’ Day.
The Blind Side is explored and defined through several different messages. Views on race are examined and thoroughly described through the sociological concepts; Minority group, racial minority group, prejudice, stereotypes and differential in power. Throughout the entire movie an example that was presented in a sociological perspective is minority group; Experiences systematic advantages and has visible identifying trait. The group is self- conscious, and membership is usually determined at birth (Healey, Pg.9).
KATHERINE JOHNSON There’s this lady that I think would be a great role model let’s find out why. First of all her name is Katherine Johnson she was an African-American physicists and mathematician. She worked for NASA, helping the American orbit around Earth and the first man to walk on the moon. She retired from NASA after over 30 years of service.
The mindset of other individuals would discriminate women for their intersectionality; especially if it is depicting the color of their skin, race, and etc. Intersectionality has many interpretations but society has characterized it into a social categorization such as race, sex, class which creates interdependent system of discrimination/ disadvantages. During the 1960’s the film “Hidden Figures”, gave a prime example of intersectionality; showing viewers how the women were treated on a daily basis in and out of NASA. Through the elements of: racism, sexism, and class (economic standards).
A study indicates that dark-skinned African Americans face a distinct disadvantage when applying for jobs. Matthew Harrison, a doctoral student at UGA undertook the first significant study of "colorism" in the workplace. He found that a light-skinned black male can have only a bachelor's degree and typical work experience and still be preferred over a dark-skinned black male with an M.B.A. and past managerial positions, simply because expectations of the light-skinned black male are much higher, and he doesn't appear as “menacing' as the darker-skinned male applicant.” This finding is possibly due to the common belief that fair-skinned blacks probably have more similarities with whites than do dark-skinned blacks, which in turn makes whites feel more comfortable around them. Katherine Johnson NASA mathematician Intelligence, hard working, and fighter are three characteristics of Katherine Johnson. Many people know that Katherine Johnson was a huge help in the space race that sent John Glenn to space, but she was so much more. As a well known NASA mathematician, Katherine Johnson showed America that African-American women could do the same as men could. She left a lasting legacy by helping other people that African-American women could be just like a man and have the same job as them.
