YOUR TITLE GOES HERE Anna Quindlen’s problem was that America had its struggles. Like people with welfare or starvation. She analysing that America isn’t that great for others who are in needs. Some are homeless,but others are rich. Anna had said that “The Agriculture Department estimated in 1999 that twelve million children were hungry or at risk of going hungry.”
I viewed Frontline a documentary series, which episode was entitled Poor Kids. The frontline personnel spent time with three children Kailey, Johnny, and Britany along with their families as they all struggle financially. We perceive a glimpse of what it is like to live below the poverty line in America through a child’s eyes. While observing the documentary, I became consciously aware that children who are considered poor or living below the poverty line were more mindful of the responsibilities of life. The children were worrisome of the lack of employment for their parents, bills, and in Britney’s case; how they would accommodate their way of living to support a new addition to the family.
In preparation for this paper I chose to read Fire in the ashes: twenty five years among the poorest children in America by Jonathan Kozol. In this book Kozol has followed these children and their family’s lives for the past twenty five years. In his writing Kozol portrays a point of view most from his background and standing would not be capable of having. He portrays what life is like for those who have been let down by the system that was meant to protect them. Kozols writing style can be very blunt at times, not for shock value, but for the sake of portraying these children’s realities, and not sugarcoating the inequalities that they are faced with.
Many times, people are just born into poverty. In the short story, “Shame” by Dick Gregory, we see that Dick was just born into a poor family, he had no choice in the matter. He constantly feels ashamed of his situation, “There was shame in running out to meet the relief truck. I hated that truck, full of food for you and your kind.”
In the article “How I Discovered the Truth about Poverty” Barbara Ehrenreich gives her view in poverty and explains why she think Michael Harington’s book “The Other American” gives a wrong view on poverty. She explained that Harrington believes that the poor thought and felt differently and what divides the poor was their different “culture of poverty.” Ehrenreich goes on to explain on how the book that became a best seller caused so many bad stereotypes on the poor that by the Reagan era poverty was seen as “bad attitudes” and “faulty lifestyles” and not by the lack of jobs or low paying jobs. And they also viewed the poor as “Dissolute, promiscuous, prone to addiction and crime, unable to “defer gratification,” or possibly even set an alarm clock.”

The United States alone has one of the highest rates of child poverty in the industrialized world. It is stated that 1 out of 5 children are living in poverty. Poverty is universal but does vary within countries, even neighborhoods. According to society poverty is hunger, lack of shelter, not having the ability to see a doctor when necessary and limited education. In third world countries, it is very common for parents to conceive a high number of children as a source of labor. Not only do these kids frequently receive slight or no education, but large families in these countries are the main contributor to global overpopulation. These children are not privileged with the same basic opportunities given to an American child.
The concepts I can relate with are worth (shame) and trust (betrayal). We experienced events that have a great impact in our life whether it’s in a positive or negative way. Dr. Parse explains the concepts and how they affect an individual. “Shame is the unbearable fear of losing face when personal expectations and expectations of others are not met” (Parse, 2014, p. 27), shame can cause someone to feel unworthy of something and even provoke feelings of embarrassment or sadness. It’s a fear that every human being experiences in their lifetime because we make goals and sometimes they cannot be met and it feels devastating when the opportunities we expected to open are shut down for us.
