Many readers have tackled the elements of realism of Bernard Malamud in many novels. Short stories have been written by Malamud but what about his books? How do they come up with such detail about where they are and describe the places so well? A close examination of The Natural and The Assistant will reveal how Malamud used realism in great detail in these stories. First, Malamud uses limited elements of realism in The Natural by using the senses of the grayness and endless winter. Malamud pointed out in the story, “as dawn titled the night, a gust of windblown rain blinded him….” (280).
