The Navajo Code Talkers During World War II, the Navajo code was among the most complicated and most important codes of all time. It was created so that the Axis powers, Germany, Italy and Japan, could not understand the messages the Allies were sending to each other. The United States of America was a key ally. And the code was successful. The so-called code talkers successfully sent over 800 messages throughout the war without error. However, despite their skills, the code talkers were treated badly because they were native American and not white men. But regardless, the code saved thousands of lives and possibly changed the course of the war in Asia. The code was used to send messages like where enemies were, where enemy ammunition was, and the things the allies needed such as ammunition and food. The code covered countries, like Britain was TOH-TA, literal translation is “Between Waters.” Russia was SILA-GOL-CHI-IH, literal translation is “Red Army.” America was NE-HE-MAH, literal is “Our Mother.” It covered months of the year, January was ATSAH-BE-YAZ, literally that is “Small Eagle. “February was WOZ-CHEIND, literally, “Squeaky voice.” It also covered military ranks which would often just describe the symbol of the rank. Captain was BESH-LEGAI-A-LAH-IH, literally “two silver bars”. For words that have no Navajo translation for it, they spelled it out using code words.
