Khullar says,”Even for the most knowledgeable and resourceful among us, consistently eating well is a challenge. ”(Khullar) which is true because although someone can be well informed it is much easier to acquire unhealthy food than it is to acquire healthy food. Being able to look at all the ingredients written on a label and analyze the food a person buys can be time consuming. Most people would rather just ignore doing this and go about their life. Khullar looks deeper into the problem of obesity that people would not consider are reasons behind it.
In recent decade, the United States has seen supermarkets continuously get filled with packages labeled with things like “Low sodium” or “No Trans Fats.” Companies stick these labels on their food to match the current fads of what is good for you and what is not. In his essay Unhappy Meals, Michael Pollan advocates a return to natural and basic foods, and deplores nutritionism. Pollan argues that nutritionism does not actually tell people what is healthy or not, and that the only way to be sure you are eating healthy is to eat natural, fresh food.
Campos also points out that people who were on diets end up weighing more then their comparable groups that never started dieting. The main reason people on diets do not succeed is because they believe just eating or not eating certain things, or taking a pill is
In her article “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of eating,” Sociologist Mary Maxfield claims that food is neither moral nor immoral, therefore, everyone can eat whatever they desire. Maxfield feels that everyone should trust their body and allow their mind to decide on what our body needs intake. On a daily basis our body needs the proper nutrients to function. But too much or too little nutrients can cause many illnesses or other problems that can be harmful and damaging to our body. However, Maxfield ignores the fact that eating whatever we want we may suffer the consequences of negative side effects.
The problem at hand is that even with the opportunities to be educated and change their lifestyle, eating habits are ingrained into these communities. The Weight of Obesity frames this theory successfully by taking readers through the steps of the obesity epidemic, and using her experience to assist in understanding
Today’s society is surfaced with various problems, one of them being our diet along with obesity. The health of our country’s people has become a national problem. One’s diet is based upon their choices, but even then there are many controversial views upon what is healthy and what is not. Two essays that I read uniquely present their views on this topic. First, there is “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating” by Mary Maxfield and then there is “Don’t Blame the Eater” by David Zinczenko.
A Global Problem through Rhetorical Eyes David Zinczenko, a nutrion and wellness editor of ABC news, portrayed a global problem to the public in a way that he could persuade them into agreeing with him that obesity is a problem that concerns all of humanity. He stated that obesity should not only concern the person suffering from it and the parents but all of humanity since it could happen to everyone. In fact, David Zinczenko himself suffered from obesity at an early age. Thankfully, he was able to turn his life around and use his situation in a way that he could help others not suffer what he did. Which is why he published the article, “Don’t Blame the Eater” in the opinion section of the New York Times and with that create knowledge of this
The article also did not mention something that I thought was very important which is motivation. As was mentioned in lecture people do not always eat because they are hungry there are several underlying reasons. The situations or environment that someone is in can also factor in to motivating whether a person eats or not. There is also mention that eating releases a dopamine that influences the reward system of the brain. Therefore, making people feel good when they eat, which leads to overeating.
In “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating,” Mary Maxfield wrote about the reason behind being overweight in America. She stated the “mistakes” Americans make when it comes to eating healthy. Maxfield, also stated
This appeals to our physiological needs because naturally, humans need to eat food and to hear from a professional that there are other influences outside of food that are giving cause to the obesity crisis gives Americans a slight sigh of relief when it comes to the degree of toxicity of our foods. Furthermore, that people eat a more wholesome diet versus those that do not, tend to be healthier than that live on fast and processed foods, there are also stark differences to recognize between these classes that should be taken into account as well such as the tendency to engage in exercise, air quality, and other health considerations such as smoking and
For someone who is obese, drinking one soda daily, is equivalent to 70 Hershey bars, adding up to 4lbs a year (Park). But if we can persuade everyone, obese or not, to become use to those healthier habits; the obese will not need the motivation. It is shown that those who eat away from home, eat more and worse (Rosenbloom). Therefore, with placing calorie information on menus and decreasing drink sizes, “eating more and worse” will not be an
‘This more than any other factor is the main cause of weight gain. We are victims of our own success”. Current related research: (“The overarching goal of the Healthy Lifestyles Research Center (HLRC) is to facilitate interactions among faculty that promote collaborative research into diverse aspects of how daily lifestyle habits and actions impact both short and long term health, chronic disease risk, and quality of life”). (“The HLRC conducts a seminar series that allows attendees to participate in discussions and exchange ideas about research developments in exercise and wellness, nutrition, and kinesiology”).
While it is important to our health to have a healthy diet and a good exercise regimen, sometimes it is just not enough when it comes to weight loss. Obesity in America has reached epidemic proportions it can lead to developing serious conditions, including: Heart disease. Type 2 diabetes, however we can solve this horrible disease by physical activity , stable diet, and limiting the amount of fast food that is being eaten by an American. There are many factors which caused obesity to spread continuously all around the world and there are many solutions to overcome the problem. One of these solutions are developing a healthy diet .
“Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food” (Hardy, 2006). The Greeks followed this idea by the philosopher Hippocrates, but today’s society does not take the message seriously. A majority of people eat harmful foods and do not receive the nutrition they need to stay healthy. There are a number of reasons why nutrition is lacking. A lot of teens and college students eat snacks that are not healthy such as chips, pop, candy, etc.
In the long term, the food cravings may turn out to be addictions to foods. It has been proven that cravings increase further when people are on diets. Therefore, when a person eats, they are likely to eat highly calorific diets, thereby undoing the benefits of their dietary regime. It should be noted that
