Peru's fight for independence lasted for over 15 years before finally gaining its freedom in the 1820s, becoming the last country in Latin America to gain independence. The Spanish arrived and began imperializing Peru in 1532, keeping Peru under their rule until the nineteenth century ("Peru Junior"). The negative effects of imperialism in Peru can be seen through the loss of indigenous cultures, struggles to create a strong government, and changes to the economic system. Many indigenous languages and traditions were lost during the imposition of Spanish rules and social customs (Stenner). Before the Spanish arrived, Peru had a complex economy with advanced agriculture and other technological achievements like a paved highway system ("Peru Junior"). Peru was a diverse place, including people from three empires and around thirty different indigenous cultures ("Peru: History"). However, Spanish imperialism created many social, economic, and political changes (Stenner). These new institutions include making politics and job opportunities only available to people who speak Spanish. Spanish was incorporated into everything, making many indigenous languages and cultures fade out as a result. These changes caused many rebellions and represented precursors to the desire for independence in Peru ("Nationalism").
