Can you imagine having your entire lives up rooted? Having everything you have ever known completely disappear? Well for thousands of families, my own included, this is a very real possibility.
The coal industry is what keeps towns such as Hanna and Forestburg alive, if the government shuts down the mines near these towns, they will cease to exist at all.
Not only will there be detrimental effects on communities, but closing Alberta’s coal mines will cost the province billions of dollars, even more will be spent after that on developing a more “natural method” of producing electricity. Natural gas will cause just as much if not more harm to the environment than coal.
This change will cause more harm than good.
People living in the communities where coal mines are being shut down will undoubtedly have their livelihoods stolen from them, their lives ripped apart as they will be forced to separate and relocate to survive.
In just a few years, the town where I spent much of my childhood and where my little sister is growing up right now will not exist at all.
We cannot let this happen.
