NORMATIVE THEORY A normative media theory explains how a media system should operate in order to conform to or realize a set of ideal social values. As such, its ontology argues that what is known is situational (or, like interpretive theory, local). The normative theory comes from social philosophy or ideology of the society and acts forming the legitimacy of media institutions. Normative media theory also refers to the notion of rights and responsibilities which encourage hope will benefit from the media for individuals and society.
