The “Only Daughter” in The Norton Mix by Sandra Cisneros. Is a story of a young girl who grew up as one of seven children in a poor Mexican family, she was the only daughter from six brothers who looked down on her for being the only girl in the family. They didn’t get along with her and isolated her because they were ashamed to have a girl in their family. Cisneros had to fight to be noticed. From an early age it was hard for her to be lonely. Cisneros emphasizes throughout the story how isolated her family made her feel. Her father would go around telling people, “I have seven sons” (45). Even though this was not meant to hurt her, these words still impacted her, it was very hard for her to deal with it.
