The Numbered treaties were a set of eleven treaties that happened between the Canadian government and First Nations. These treaties were negotiated between 1871-1877, the goal of these treaties was for the Canadian government to get a hold of the First Nations land and in return, they gave them reserved pieces of land, money, tools and the right to hunt and fish in that area. Treaties 1-8 occurred between 1871-1877 and was to get the land located near the Canadian and U.S.A border. This also gave way to the construction of the CPR because it needed that land. The other 8-11 treaties happened between 1899-1921 and aimed to take the First Nations’ north-eastern land, this also gave room for more settlement and connected B.C with the rest of Canada. Others felt like they weren’t being taken seriously and that they were actually losing more than gaining. However, in the end, some saw no other viable option and signed the treaty. Another situation that caused problems was the explanation of the treaties. Because the Europeans and First Nations didn’t speak a common language so some words had different meanings and were understood differently by the two societies. Also, the First Nations leaders didn’t understand the meaning and implication of some treaty terms as “cede, release, yield up and surrender.” The Aboriginals thought of the treaties as a mean to trade, not to own things. Another major issue and challenge with the numbered treaties were the fact that that there were many verbal promises made to the First Nations that didn't actually happen. These promises are called outside promises and were promises that weren’t actually written on the treaties.
