The Old Man and the Sea Book Report
The main idea of this book is about an elderly man named Santiago who struggles to catch a large, pointy nosed fish called a marlin. Vowing to go “Far Out” to the Gulf of Mexico to find it, he does so. There, he begins to track the marlin down. He tries to survive the lack of stored food by killing various fish, dolphins, and other marine life. While on his journey to finally capture this sea creature, he develops a bond with it for its great dignity and determination to win.
The setting takes place in the late 1940s, in a small fishing village on Havana, Cuba, then shifting to the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf is full of sea life, plants, and most importantly, the marlin. I found out this takes place in the 1940s as New York Yankees member, Joe DiMaggio, was still alive and youthful at this time, being born in 1914. This time period shows the lack of technology besides radios, and how people struggled to build things like boats without modern tools. The heat and vicious underwater mammals gave Santiago some struggling.

The marlin has been a target for the old man to focus on, mainly from when it attacked his boat when his apprentice was five years old and on it as well. Santiago is incredibly determined to complete his goal, even if it means dying at sea. Manolin is eager to help his mentor, yet at the same time concerned by his frail condition as a senior. The marlin bears high nobility and willpower, fighting against Santiago even while hooked on to his fishing
