They provoke Johnny and Ponyboy and then they provoke them back which offends the Socs. This is when Bob tells Randy to basically drown Ponyboy which he does in the heat of the conflict Johnny kills Bob.
In self defense and trying to stop the Socs from drowning Ponyboy, Johnny pulled out his switchblade and killed Bob. The boys quickly decided to get out of town in an effort to avoid the “fuzz.” The boys say they hid away in the abandoned church for about five days when their friend and member of their gang, Dally Winston, came to help them. In the greaser gang, the protagonist, Ponyboy, is always getting good grades and is the smartest in the gang. Dally is one of the members in the gang, Ponyboy 's brother, has been in jail multiple times. Sodapop is also Ponyboy’s brother. He works at a gas station.

Ponyboy lived with his two brothers Darry and Sodapop after his parents were killed in a car accident. Ponyboy had some friends in the gang: Steve, Two-Bit, Dally but his best friend was a boy named Johnny who was considered the gang`s mascot. Ponyboy was a boy who always wanted to be tough but an accident that happened in the story might make him change of mind on what he wanted to be. He also finds a way of how to finish the gang that was taking place from many tima.
The Soc's kept harassing the boys and they knew a fight was about to happen. So, Jonny reached into back pocket to make sure he still had the switchblade they were lucky he had. Ponyboy clearly said something that the Soc's didn't like and they went after them. As a couple of the Soc's were kicking and beating Jonny, the remaining Soc's were trying to drown Ponyboy. He was struggling but managed to get loose.
Once the movie finishes and they all decide to walk to Two-Bit’s house to get his car so he can take the girls home. While on their walk, a blue Mustang rides by and the girls stop in shock, as do the boys. After the moment of tenseness everyone continues walking and talking, but the blue Mustang returns, this time two Socs getting out of the car. Johnny sees one of the Socs with rings and immediately realizes that it is the same group that had beaten him up so horribly that terrible night. Everyone gets home safely but Ponyboy and Johnny drift to sleep in an empty lot; Ponyboy then is awoken by Johnny who tells him to get home since it was very late.

Hinton’s Novel The Outsiders Dally is hard, cold, and unbreakable. however, at the end of the story, his emotions overcome him because of what he went through.
Ponyboy’s parents died in a car crash leaving his oldest brother Darrel also known as Darry to take care of his two younger brothers. The middle brother Sodapop is always trying to keep Darry and Ponyboy from fighting. Darry has become more of a parent figure in in Ponyboys life causing a lot of tension between the two. Some of the other main characters are Johnny, Two-Bit, Dallas, and Steve. They are all Greasres and are coincided a gang but just think of each other as friends.
Then there 's the Greasers, who live poorly and get blamed for most of the things that go down in the city. Ponyboy, and Johnny, two Greasers, that at first, clang to the fact that they hated Socs. All they wanted to do was fight the other gang to look tough and earn respect. In the beginning of the story, Ponyboy wishes he looked tough.
