I viewed the first two episodes of “The Pacific”. Although they were just the beginning of what I am sure is an otherwise excellent series, I found the videos to be very insightful into the type of warfighting strategies that were used. In traditional wars fought in past years, warfighting strategies were more valiant and civilized. As demonstrated by “The Pacific”, the battles leant towards a guerrilla-warfare strategy. The main reason for this transformation in strategy was because of the new type of enemy that the United States faced. Japanese soldiers embodied a fighting spirit, “issen gorin”, that would stop at nothing to bring honor to themselves and their homeland. This is most evident in the movie when the marines are investigating the damage after their first major battle on Guadalcanal. One of the Japanese soldiers was badly wounded and an American went over to evaluate his physical state when the Japanese soldier pulled out a grenade and killed the both of them. …show more content…
It showed the transition of the soldier’s lives back home to the battlefield. One of the most notably peculiar scenes was when the men were about to storm the beach for the first time and everyone was preparing themselves to meet their demise and upon arrival, were greeted by a group of fellow soldiers. As the shows progressed, the men began to get the feel for the fighting style that the Japanese initiated. The marines slowly pushed across the island and the Japanese were there battling them every step of the way, hiding in the foliage. The second episode ends with the men boarding a ship to take them back home. They all had a shocked expression on their faces when the ship’s cook told them that they were famous back in the States. Their valiant efforts put them on the cover of magazines
