Sedgewick payed no attention in class and never knew answers to the questions he was asked. These two were like arch-nemesis.
During her visit to Whitman, Alexandra made comparisons between her high school years and the high school years of the upperclassmen observed. She noticed the variety of differences between them because during her years there was not much palpable competition but now there was between the students at Whitman. The competition of getting the best grades was a huge deal to the students because their grades were a factor to getting admitted to the college of their choice. City of Thieves is historical fiction set in the besieged Russian city of Leningrad during World War Two. Lev Beniov, a Jewish seventeen year old, details his story as the protagonist through his first person narrative perspective of the siege. Benioff’s focus is the desensitized attitudes and behaviour shared by characters throughout the novel as they contend with dehumanising situations which would appear horrifying under circumstances that have been unaffected by war. Through the utilisation of techniques such as characterisation, plot and first person narrative, Benioff explores the dehumanising aspects of war in his novel.

I feel that I have struggled with this because I lack confidence on what I am trying to prove or say in my writing. When reading in the past I have never pushed myself to question the author’s purpose or ask questions that invoke much thought. Up to this point in the year writing in my journal as well as annotating in the text, has helped my reading and writing immensely.
Donna Tartt’s The Secret History tells the story of Richard Papen’s transfer from a small college in his hometown Plano, California, to an elite college in Vermont, Hampden College. During his first week, he becomes obsessively captivated by the five students in a highly selective Greek class and goes to extreme lengths to be accepted by the group’s members Henry Winter, Bunny Corcoran, Francis Abernathy, twins Charles and Camilla Macaulay, and their teacher Julian Morrow. This obsession and desire to please causes Richard’s involvement in two murders that distort his idea of morality. The novel is best analyzed by applying psychoanalytical and feminist theory to the characters with critical articles providing additional information and showing a different perspective. I have chosen to analyze the narrator, Richard Papen, the group leader, Henry Winter, and the only major female character, Camilla Macaulay.
