In the “Palace Thief, we see a change in character behavior arise between Mr. Hundert. and Sedgewick, Mr. Hundert and Senator Bell, and Mr. Hundert and Charles Ellerby. Mr. Hundert is recalling past events that happened at St. Benedict upon the arrival of a particular student, Sedgewick Bell. He recalls how the arrival affected him, his colleagues, the boy's father, and young Sedgewick. Mr. Hundert starts to recall how Sedgewick antics would always get him in trouble, and see him as a mockery to the class, and St. Benedict's. He starts to see a decline in the boy's grades and enlist a conference with the boy's father, Senator Bell; after the conference with boy obnoxious and arrogant father, he sympathizes with Sedgewick. Mr. Hundert starts to see a change in Sedgewick behavior and grades as a result of the conference. Hundert and Charles Ellerby relationship grew complicated, at first Mr. Hundert lean towards Ellerby and even confided in him the cheating scandal with Sedgewick. Hundert spoke to Charles Ellerby of how headmaster Mr. Woodbridge responded to Hundert accusations of Sedgewick; Charles Ellerby felt as though if it was Hundert duty to circumvent the headmaster and report to the boy father. He even starts to look up to Ellerby stating “I marshaled my will again by imagining what Charles Ellerby would do in this situation” However their relationship starts to diverge as years go by and it's time to pick a new headmaster and Mr. Hundert at the time had been assistant headmaster. Ellerby, to Mr.Hundert astonishment, had exposed Mr. Hudert saying that he is old and that his teaching methods were impractical.Ellerby had become an opponent of Hundert for the position of headmaster.
