Journalists are expected to report responsibility and truthfully for the entirety of their career. Many of these duties are outlined in the Society of Professional Journalist(SPJ) code of ethics. The journalism profession doesn’t have a set contract they live by instead it widley encourages the seeking of the truth above all else. The SPJ does not specify how journalists should do their job instead it’s a list of ethical suggestions to follow when conducting themselves. This level of unknown in the profession can cause of grey area to develop between what’s expected in the duties of a journalist since it isn’t explicitly stated. The investigator journalist, Joseph Frady, ultimately is killed when in pursuit of truth in the story. The situation leading up to Frady’s unfortunate death stemmed from the assassination of senator Charles Carroll which was viewed by both Frady and Lee Carter. Carter decided to become involved and investigate it herself which ends with her overdosing on barbiturates and alcohol, although foul play is suggested. The story becomes so important to Frady it brings him to the small town of Salmontail where the sheriff will attempt to kill him and frame it as a drowning. To no avail Frady survives and by the end of the film Frady has more than a total of four attempts on his life; one is successful. He intercepts a bomb at a airport, survives being blown up on a ship, and unfortunately is killed and framed for another assassination of a political figure, George Hammond. This news story becomes a serious public problem when it involves the lives of civilians on the plane. This is when the conspiracy is taken out of the realm of just idle curiosity and turns into an affair that must be made known to the public. The public has a right encouraged by journalists to understand their communities and country. And since Frady was forced into this world he must uncover it, whether he wants to or
