On the night of the murder, five drunken Socs pull up on the street and attacked Johnny and Ponyboy. One of the Socs tried drowning Ponyboy while at the same time Johnny felt threatened by another Socs named Bob which led to Johnny killing him in self defense. Johnny is justified in what he did and is not guilty because he was defending himself from the Socs. The Socs had threatened to harm Johnny and Ponyboy earlier that night and Johnny recognized Bob as someone who had attacked him before. Johnny recognized Bob from the last time he got jumped in the abandoned lot.

But what I can argue is the “Why?”. Ponyboy was getting drowned so he did not see anything. BUT, Cherry Valance has already testified that Bob was intoxicated and Johnny was using self-defense. Curtis was beginning to drown when Randy (another member of the Socials) was ordered to by Sheldon.

Johnny Cade should not be cursed for doing what was right, he was never rewarded and never desired to murder Bob Sheldon. He hurt and scared and did what he did out of impulse. Yet I believe as Johnny’s Defense lawyer that he should not be cursed by being jailed because either way a man would have been killed, the Socs were heavily intoxicated, and Johnny was severely beaten in the past by Bob leaving him feared and distraught.
John was later on murdered by a rival cattle gang, in 1878, which made Henry participate in the Lincoln County War. Henry became furious after finding out and soon after became the leader of a vigilante posse called “regulators” their purpose was to capture or kill the individuals who killed John. Not one of the perpetrators was captured but two of them were killed by Henry’s posse. After the killings, a war broke out between the rival gangs and, amplified after Henry killed John’s murderer, Lincoln’s Sheriff Bill Brady.
A clear sign of the gangs influence on Johnny was when he decided to prevent the Soc’s from drowning Ponyboy and defending himself instead of letting the Socs beat them up and have them possibly drown Ponyboy. More specifically, after finally fighting back and killing Bob, he says to Ponyboy “‘I killed him’ he said slowly. ‘I killed that boy”’(Hinton 56). Here the author is explaining how shocked Johnny was once he killed the Soc.
