Learning to move on can be difficult. Leaving the past in the past can be hard for a lot of people to do. Sometimes it's for the best, this is a situation where it would have been. “The Great Gatsby '' by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a book that takes place in york, with the characters being Nick and Jay Gatsby. Others including Daisy, Tom, Mrthyl, and Jordan are also large parts of the story. The book is full of heartbreak and lying. A tale of two lovers and the obstacles they face. The lessons are many but the two I'll be focusing on are, you cannot repeat the past, and the bad ways greed affects people.

After the funeral Nick is walking around the streets of town, then he spots Tom. He describes him as walking in a defensive way with his arm out. Tom crosses the street and approaches Nick like this, then in an almost demanding way asks Nick for a handshake. Meant as almost a final forwell. Nick does not shake his hand and instead questions Tom about the events that night. to which Tom immediately tries to make excuses for why he told the man of gatsby and why he is now dead. Tom is said to have a defensive tone which makes it seem he is trying to guilt trip Nick. Doing so by talking of the grief he feels himself and how bad it made him feel to hear of Gatsby's death. As if to make reasons for his greed and why he did the things he did. Nick writes about how he feels about Daisy and Tom now and how he knows the way they see things their actions were justified and unselfish- stating that they can't see the truth to it all. He wrote, “they were careless people, Tom and Daisy-they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back to their money and their vast carelessness.”(Fitzgerald 153). Setting was used to explain how Nick sees Tom again after the funeral. A conflict between Nick and Tom about what happened was introduced and a communicative tone was described to add onto the conflict. They had stayed up all night talking. Gatsby made a remark about Daisy never loving Tom and Nick got to thinking about Gatsby's past and how he got here. Nick writes about Gatsby's past and gets into detail about how he had tried after the war to make his way back to Daisy, a miserable but irresistible trip it was said to be, how he had walked the streets they walked together for a week in search of her. Talking of how he visited all the places they went together. The city was described to have a melancholy beauty even when she was gone from it. How, in the end failed and out of money had to leave the old town they first loved in. “He left feeling that if he had searched harder he might have found her-that he was leaving her behind''(Fitzgerald130). Settings were used to send a melancholy message about the trip he made to find Daisy. The tone through it is bitter-sweet, as an attempt to make the readers feel saddened for Gatsby and his trip. This is to show the readers that Gatsby's selfish love for Daisy caused him to hurt himself and anyone that wanted to get close to
