While watching the beloved mom-and-daughter television show “Gilmore Girls”, one may start to pick up the controversial parenting styles of several of the characters. From Ms. Kim’s and Emily’s authoritarian styles to the uninvolved style of Christopher and Jimmy, every parent and child duo has a wildly different dynamic. One of the varied styles that one might see the most while watching is the permissive parenting style Lorelai Gilmore uses to parent her daughter Rory.
In order to understand why Lorelai Gilmore uses the permissive parenting style, you must look back to how she was parented first. Lorelai was raised by Emily and Richard Gilmore. They are both honorable socialites who live in New England. They have tons of money, tons of friends, and also a ton of rules. This alludes to their strict, and failed, authoritarian parenting style. Lorelai was always a carefree, rebellious spirit who only wanted to battle everything her parents wanted her to do. She was forced into many situations, such as fancy dinners and parties, cotillions, and even private schools. When Lorelai was sixteen, she became pregnant with Rory. This resulted in her running away and starting a life on her own (Swirsky, 2022).

One can see these traits on multiple occasions throughout the show’s run. The first example would be anytime Lorelai was going through a breakup. Rory would always be the one to comfort her mother, something that should never happen to a teenager. Later on in the show, Rory’s first-ever boyfriend, Dean, got married. Rory did not like this at all. They ended up getting together, so Dean cheated on his wife. Rory then claimed that Dean was not just married, but that he was “my Dean”.
