While Socrates awaits his death in prison, Crito visits him one day to discuss Socrates choice to stay and await his penalty. Crito has various criticisms of Socrates’s decision which I will present and explain. I will then explore how Socrates responds to each of Crito’s criticisms and the successfulness of his responses. Finally, I will analyze Socrates’s response and give my own opinion of its effectiveness. In the reading, I found that Crito has five main criticisms that he presents to Socrates. The first criticism that Crito has is that the majority of people will think that Crito did not do enough to help Socrates. Crito is a wealthy man who would no doubt have the adequate amount in order to pay off some people as well as provide safe passage for Socrates. He would also be able to give Socrates a place of sanctuary with friends who would be able to keep Socrates safe. The motivations or the situation does not matter. When someone commits a wrongful act, it is always wrong. Furthermore, if someone is wronged or mistreated by another, it is not just to retaliate with a wrong. As mentioned before, any wrong in any context is always wrong. With this in mind, I will move on to Socrates’s example. Socrates conjures an imaginary conversation with the city in which the city asks him if he is destroying the laws and the city itself by escaping. For if someone as esteemed as Socrates were to go against the laws of the city surely others would follow which would lead to the end of order and justice. Crito believes that their response to the city should be that the city wronged Socrates. However, this points back to the conclusion established earlier about wrongful actions.
