Does marital status affect one’s happiness? Happiness can only be affected by things that one let’s affect it. Some of these things may be what one gets out of the marriage, what they would rather be doing that makes them happy or simply choosing against it because that is not what they want for themselves. Marriage can cause happiness if one is happy with their marriage or the things they are putting in or getting out of their marriage. If one doesn’t care about their marital status they will find other things to make them happy whether that is a new hobby or getting involved with a career that they would absolutely love. She writes about a man taking his family on a journey to the Congo and during this time the Congo is in a fight for Independence from Belgium. In the novel some of the characters depict are real historical people affecting the Congo during their fight for independance. Some of these people being Patrice Lumumba who was the prime minister in the Congo and Joseph Kasa-Vubu who was the Congo’s president. These people play an important role in the Congo’s war for Independence from Belgium and the different things that each wanted for the Congo. Marital status may affect your happiness if you are happy by the things that status may bring you, whether that is the things you benefit from not being in a relationship or the things you get from being in a relationship. This is shown through the Price family relationships. From the separation of Orleanna and Nathan, Adah staying single, Rachel going through multiple marriages and Leah having four kids and a husband who was imprisoned. Through the relationships in The Poisonwood Bible we can see the different causes of happiness and some of them being objects, hobbies and the relationship itself. Marital status should only affect one’s happiness unless that is what someone is involved in all the time. For example Leah was always involved with her family whereas Adah or Orleanna found different things to keep them occupied and happy whether that was house work for Orleanna or school for Adah. The only time marital status may have a false happy effect is when one is trying to get something out of the relationship but has nothing to put in. Don’t let marital status affect one’s happiness simply because that is what someone wants for their life. Rather let happiness find it’s way in based on everyday things one chooses to do. Marital status should only affect one’s life if they have a family or spouse to care for and love being around them and supporting them in everything they
