The story starts off in London, England, 1857 with a thief fresh from his new heist with the law right behind his tail. All of the sudden he falls through a glass roof and onto a grinding machine, damaging his entire body. He doesn’t die because a young doctor by the name of Doctor Robert Farcett is trying to make a name for him in the medical field, so he sees this opportunity to save a man from an inch away from death and goes for it. He succeeds and the thief was saved and sent to trial, and was convicted for theft with a sentence of four years, and was thus given the name he would be recognized by for the next four years: Prisoner 493. From then on he spent the rest of his time devising a fool proof plan to live in the upper class, by selling the valuable stolen goods from the mansions that he will raid once he’s jail. While Prisoner 493 was devising his plan he came across a little speed bump: because upper class people don’t usually smell like raw sewage, he would need and accomplice for his missions. The real question was who would be his accomplice for these missions? Prisoner 493 had been out of touch with the real world for so long that he knew nobody. At first he considered some of the prisoners; he needed someone who knew how to stage heist, and could keep absolute secrecy. While he was Montmorency he rented a room at the Marimion a five star hotel. As the heist got more and more expensive the police started to take notice, but couldn’t figure out who stole the valuable good. Eventually an old man named Freak show Frank was convicted of all the robberies, and was hanged for his crimes. Freak show was one of the few friends Montmorency had during his time in prison. It caused him great guilt when his old friend got hanged for his crimes. Montmorency saved a wealthy old man named Fox-Sewlyn; because Montmorency saved Fox-Sewlyn’s life he bought Montmorency a drink. From then on they became the best of friends. While drinking in a gentlemens club Montmorency makes a bet that put all his skills as a thief to the test. He bet Fox-Sewlyn that he could get into the Mauramanian Embassy and retrieve top secret information about a war they could start. In the end he succeeds and Fox-Sewlyn gets him a job working for the British Government. As he becomes Montmorency the spy, he leaves Scarper the thief, and returns all his stolen goods back to where they came from, but he kept Scarpers sewer equipment as a souvenir.
