The genre of Micah is categorized as a prophecy. A prophecy is associated with predicting the future along with exposing the Israelites of their sins and calling for their repentance and obedience. When reading Micah, it is important to be aware of the interpretive principles that go along with prophecy books. The prophets were mainly covenant enforcers, which means they were people who spoke God’s concerns to His people in His behalf . and 400 B.C. Micah was one of Twelve Minor Prophets who spoke to God’s people concerning their sins. The purpose of the book was God speaking through Micah to His people to repent and turn back to Him. Despite the people’s numerous sins and immoralities, God restates His love to them through Micah. The book of Micah can be divided into three sections that all begin with the word “Hear” (1:2,3:1,6:1). They all open with an “oracle of doom” and end with an “oracle of hope” . The first section is a message to everyone, the second address the leaders, and the final one is a message to God’s people to away from their sinful ways and back to God . This passage, Malachi 6:1-8, is a part of the last division. Micah’s covenant lawsuit in this passage acts as a warning to the Israelites, that if they do not turn back to God, they might endure a tragedy like that of Isreal . In verse five, it alludes to three stories: Balak king of Moab, Balaam the son of Beor, and Shittim to Gilgal. All three of these are saving acts of God for His people . These acts of righteousness display that God deserves more from His people who are simply half-heartedly serving God.
