The Pros And Cons Of Affirmative Action

Throughout the United States, thousands of high school seniors are eagerly awaiting their acceptance letters from colleges and universities. Some of these seniors, however, despite their high grades, will be faced with disappointment as their dreams are broken. Although life is bound to come with failures, these specific failures are often not the student’s own fault. Their rejection letters are caused by the Affirmative Action law that is applied by every University and college. “Affirmative Action policies are those in which an institution or organization actively engages in efforts to improve opportunities for historically excluded groups in American Society” (“Affirmative Action,” par. 1). This, however, is often not the case in many colleges and universities. Affirmative Action has become a biased, outdated policy, which practices reverse discrimination towards non-minority groups, as a way to atone for the discrimination done to minorities in the past. There are numerous reasons why Affirmative Action should not be a part of college admissions, including: its disregard of backgrounds, merit, and the fact that reverse discrimination will only further the problem. White students are ignored because of their race, while other factors do not even come into consideration. This, however, will continue to be reality while Affirmative Action laws are still in place. “Such laws, assure that admissions are by privilege, not merit and are creating a new form of separate and unequal in a nation that will soon be majority minority” (Schmidt, par. 11). Since minorities will soon be the majority, whites should theoretically begin receiving the minority scholarships instead. White people are called out for only seeing people as races, rather than as a sum of all their parts, however, that is exactly what Affirmative Action does during college
