I. INTRODUCTION Since their creation in 1945, nuclear weapons have posed a critical security risk, as they possess world-ending capabilities, and do not discriminate against those they affect. As of 2024, there are nine nuclear armed states as opposed to the single nuclear weapon state that existed in 1945. This is problematic because an increased number of nuclear-armed states raises the potential for a nuclear conflict to occur. Some individuals may argue that nuclear weapons do not pose an immediate security risk because they have not been used in conflict since the 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The bomb detonated on Hiroshima was named “Little Boy” due to its slim design while the bomb dropped on Nagasaki was called “Fat Man” due to its bulbous shape. Following the atomic bombings, United States leaders justified their attacks by stating that they were necessary to accelerate Japan’s WWII surrender. They elaborated that although the bombings lead to a massive death toll within the Japanese population, it was nothing compared to the number of lives that would have been lost had WWII persisted (Tomonaga 491, 2019). The legacy of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings is that they exposed the true horrors and destructive capacity of nuclear weapons. In Japan’s case, the risks imposed by nuclear use can be specifically noticed by investigating the massive death toll, leukemia, and PTSD cases that arose out of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. By analyzing the atomic bombings, indisputable evidence can be gathered on the risks of nuclear use and their potential for human destruction based upon real world events. The most obvious and immediate effect of the atomic bombings in Japan was the incredible death toll that it produced.
