While the designs of autonomous vehicles may change over time, the primary purpose of autonomous vehicles is to get the user from one place to another(Gurney), which is traditionally accomplished with typical cars today. However, future purposes for self driving cars would potentially increase productivity and assist those with diminished capabilities and cannot safely operate vehicles themselves. In a productivity driven world, the aspect of people can perform tasks without actual driving behind the wheel. Automated vehicle technologies are the computer systems that assist human drivers by automating aspects of vehicle control, but driverless vehicles that function perfectly will crash, that certain crashes require the vehicle to make complex ethical decisions, and that there is no obvious way to encode human ethics in computers(Goodall). Television has protrayed autonomous cars for decades and called them “cars of the future”(Gurney). The future is here now and major car manufacturers and Google are currently test-driving and developing autonomous cars. Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, is predicting that Google Cars will be available for public use in five years. General Motors predicts that self-driving cars will be on the road within the decade. Stanford Law School is already teaching a course on the law of autonomous driving(Gurney). With automobile accidents in the United States costing around 300 billion dollars per year measured in deaths, healthcare, and property loss; 100 billions dollars in traffic congestion costs; the development of autonomous cars would reduce such costs and maximize safety on roadways, but the risks and liability issues that come with self-driving cars are keeping this technology from becoming widely
