Books are an essential way to gain knowledge whether they are controversial or not. Thousands of books have been banned from public libraries and schools due to being deemed ‘inappropriate’ by parents, administrators, or religious leaders. Whether Americans should ban books in public libraries and schools is an often debated topic. This censorship of books is dangerous, as it restricts the American people's’ ability to access information, leaving Americans ignorant. Historically, banning books is not a new practice.
In my attempt to answer my research question, “Why are books banned?” , I have used three main sources to conduct my research on this topic, two online articles, and one book. From my two online articles, “10 Reasons for Banning Books, and 5 Much Better Reasons Not To” and “Banned Books: Reasons for Banning Books”, I have learned that books are most commonly banned because of religious views, political views, sexual dialog, racial themes, violence, and profanity. and i used three different texts below from the articles I got. Then, I decided to use these three texts from each of the articles because two of them mostly talked about decisions people came up during the 1950s and now with to decide whether they should ban books depending on their views of what’s right or wrong. This text tells us that there is no point in banning books because many kids these days are aware of sex, gender, violence etc. However the Keller high school is considering banning these types of books with sexual, violence or anything that could be inappropriate for the school district.
Books can create portals to different life experiences and encourage reading. A few schools and libraries have challenged the educational value of some books, however, therefore leading them to eventually be prohibited in a particular place. Each reason may be different depending on the book and the location of the exclusions. Books are icons of literature and their value should outshine the occasionally offensive topic. Be that as it may, there are multiple reasons why books should be taught and included in a curriculum.
Censoring Books In Public Schools Is Necessary To Protect The Children Books have been censored for decades, mostly for secular and religious reasons. With the invention of the printing press in 1450, it became harder to eliminate offensive books, however a study conducted at the American Library Association (ALA), says that most books have been challenged by parents followed by patrons, a board or administration, librarians or teachers, political and religious groups, and the government. The same study showed that “sexually explicit content, offensive language, and "unsuited to any age group" are the top three reasons cited for requesting a book to be removed” (“Banned Books”). Books in public schools should continue to be censored for the protection of children and the improvement of society.

Banning books is against the writers right for freedom of speech, which is the first amendment. Students have the right to read, reading is not illegal, so why ban books? If a reader is mature enough to handle some curse words or bad behavior then they should be able to read banned books. Some people believe books should not be banned in schools/libraries but just because you do not like it does not mean it should be taken away, that is the authors freedom of speech.
Not only does banning books violate authors' rights, restricting them from freedom of speech, but it also violates the students' rights to "receive and express ideas" (Webb). Many people who think certain books deserve to be banned do not agree with or dislike the themes present in the books. For example, as of 2020, the top five reasons for banning books were sexual content, offensive language, being unsuited to the age group, religious viewpoints, and LGBTQIA+ content. The authors who decide to have these themes in their book are utilizing their freedom of speech. If someone were to take that away, it would be unconstitutional.
Although many students may not agree with the banning of books some students do think that some high school books don’t belong in a high school library. Shequoya Jones said “ I don’t think that all books belong in school libraries because some of the books have explicit language and material that some readers are not ready for. Also, you can attain the same books in the public library if you really want them”. This demonstrates students are not always prepared for the content inside the books, even when reading the back of the book. Andre Jones said “Even when reading the back of the book it doesn’t give me the specifics of the explicitness of book”.

At one point in time, over 7,220 books have been challenged to be banned. Though these books have been removed for the safety of children, not all books should be banned for many reasons. These include the fact that banning books is infringing on the First Amendment, keeping children from understanding the real world, and, even though there are many reasons for book banning, not banning books could help a student’s education and can even work against itself. Banning a book from a school or public library could go against a person’s First Amendment of the freedom of press.
Books should not be banned from schools and libraries, everyone should be allowed to be informed on what’s happening in the world and learn about diversity, despite a book having unpopular views. Some books are frequently banned in schools because they contain profanity/slurs, and explicit content; however, some people argue that these precisely same books are worth reading because they teach extremely crucial life lessons, and defends the First Amendment.
