Everyone is miserable in a dystopia but, everyone in a utopia is happy. In a dystopia the people are you usually abused by their government. In a utopia the people are usually treated fairly and nicely. Although, many people believe war defines utopia and peace defines utopia, in reality bad government actions define a dystopia and knowledge defines a utopia. You can see this in any type of literature.

Hi Allison, I have not read this book yet, but I heard about it a lot. The purpose of writing is to express our thoughts and emotions about our environment, surroundings, and thing we go through in life. That being said, I believe that it is unjustifiable that the book is banned from certain areas; Angelou simply used the book to express the true reality of what African Americans encountered during that time period. The descriptions of rape, use of profanity, racism, violence, and drug abuse all exemplify the actual part of reality in which the vast majority would like to ignore. I believe that the banning of the book convey that challengers want to get rid of a genuine part in African Americans’ history, and thus I don’t approve of banning
Instead of giving in to these students’ demands, universities should abandon restrictive speech codes and officially discourage trigger warnings. Universities should also prepare students for how to live in a world with potential offenses, an example of this is teaching them practices of cognitive behavioral therapy. A suggestion that I have for a future study is to teach students throughout high school the practices of cognitive behavioral therapy to help cope with emotionally discomforting subjects, as well as inform them that the real world will have no “trigger warnings” to help you through life. By doing this, it exposes people to the fact that reality doesn’t accommodate trigger warnings and cop outs due to emotional health reasons, and it gives them methods to combat these anxiety-inducing subjects to help them live their lives. These findings teach us that in life we will have to deal with discomforting people and opinions, but by knowing how to live
Books can create portals to different life experiences and encourage reading. A few schools and libraries have challenged the educational value of some books, however, therefore leading them to eventually be prohibited in a particular place. Each reason may be different depending on the book and the location of the exclusions. Books are icons of literature and their value should outshine the occasionally offensive topic. Harper Lee once said “The book to read is not the one that thinks for you, but the one which makes you think.” Students have always relied on books for both pleasure and education; however, a trend to ban certain novels has popularized and caused the contamination of the inventory of novels available to students in their public schools and libraries. Accusations against books that contain implicit storylines and violence has ultimately caused a massive revolution of parents and other adult figures to shelter students from any book deemed inappropriate, depriving these students from learning such real-world concepts. While parents are allowed to censor for their own children, they have no right to impose book bans in a uniform manner because it denies students their fundamental freedom of expression and enforces universal censorship.
