Colleges and employers mistreatment of applicants Colleges admissions officers and employers sometimes use unethical methods to decide if you’re eligible for a job, or if you will fit the views of, or fit the standards of that college of business. With people hiring for jobs, and college looking for students. They may end up doing this by going through social media to get to the best candidates, and the best students, however, sometimes they get see things that are a breach of privacy, by accessing private information. While social media sites give people the option to mark something private, which prevents most people from viewing it, some companies primarily, but possible some colleges, have ways of accessing that information. While barring the anyone, even companies and colleges, from viewing it would mean someone could just mark everything on social media private to view their accounts, it may be necessary as privacy also immensely important. Another source, written by Timothy B. Lee, states “But the bottom line is that a public Facebook page is just that: Public. People are responsible for what they post “ (Lee 1). This is true, marking everything private should also not be allowed, as you are truly the one responsible for everything on that account. Even if someone snaps a picture of you doing something bad, and they post it, you were the one doing something bad. This is part of the problem, while companies and colleges are partially responsible for being distrustful, so are the applicants, hiding things, or complaining when public information is justifiably used against them. It is human nature to not like being rejected, and some people blame the companies and colleges for discrimination or misuse of information, but it is public information they should be using, and if they are, they it is the applicants fault. The worst of it is if that information is private or kept under the radar to protect someone. There have been attempts to control this that would not work, not ones that would be constitutional or go over well with in the United States, due to it having questionable constitutional legality. This would be the path Germany is taking for companies in Germany. This source, written by David Jolly, is about “the German government on Wednesday proposed placing restrictions on employers who want to use Facebook profiles when recruiting” (Jolly 1). This is one way of making sure companies in particular, which could be extended to colleges, do not use way of finding information they should not see, which is to censor and monitor it.
