The Industrial Relations system is controlled by collective bargaining. Collective Bargaining is a social process that establishes agreements which are mutually concerned to the employers as well as the unions by negotiations. It is a joint process dealing with the management in its relationships with their work people as well as the regulations of conditions of employment. Collective Bargaining has a political and economic basis, both sides with the common interest of the distribution of power and income. Collective Bargaining is basically where the employer maintains and continues to improve the lives of their workers. Trade unions are the most common form of employee representation across the world. They are experts in collective bargaining and will use this expertise to resolve any employment issues their members may have. The strength of a union is its ability to organise and unite workers within an organisation. A trade unions legal position is covered under the Trade Union Act 1941. Trade unions are organisations who negotiate on behalf of their members. The main goals of trade unions is to replace individual bargaining with collective bargaining and so balancing out the level of power in favour of employees, to help with the development of a political system where workers have more influence on political decisions and also to achieve satisfactory levels of pay and conditions of employment and to provide its members with a range of services. Trade unions will represent their member in court if they have to appear at a hearing about a work related dispute. Trade unions also offer training to their members in areas of employment law as well as offering them discounts on things like car insurance or travel. They also hold campaigns in order to lure new members to join their union. In Ireland there are three broad categories of trade unions. The first being Craft unions, second being General unions and the third being White Collar unions. Craft unions cater for individuals who have a particular skill or qualification. For example electricians, engineers or construction workers. An example of a Craft union in Ireland is the Technical, Electrical and Engineering Union
