The topic of Labor Unions has been the focus of many political debates in recent years, with these discussions having people advocate for and against the unions. Labor Unions are an organization that represent a collective group of employees to protect and further theirs rights and interests. Labor Unions were first introduced in the eighteenth century with increasing numbers around the United States and the world, but unfortunately during the past decade these numbers have drastically decreased, resulting in less education and achievement of solidarity among employees. One of the main reasons people do not agree with the usage of labor unions are because they view it as a system of abuse. When they were first established in the eighteenth century they served a very valuable purpose on fixing the horrible working conditions and extremely low pay. Since this time nonunion members think that people abuse the power the union offers such as members knowing what the company can and cannot fire them for and that all the “loop holes” have been exposed to the union members. Not only do people think that the system is abused but they also believe that unions devaluate hard workers. When a contract states that there will be fair wages that means that everyone will receive the same amount of pay which means that there is no strive to do better and those who are dedicated workers lose the lack of value and motivation that they put into their work. They allow a power balance between employers and employees, while providing benefits and opportunities for a life time. The unity and stance as a majority will always have a power impact than a single stance alone. Being united with men and women who believe and want the same thing as their co-worker can be ultimately powerful and enriching. Unfortunately, within the past decade there has been a violet drop in the amount of unions in the United States by thirty percent, and decreasing. The people of the United States are losing their labor unions due to the lack of disagreement of political views as well as the loss of jobs that provide unions. From my point of view from personal family experience labor unions can be life impacting in positive ways. Through the union my family has been blessed with full coverage of medical, dental, and vision insurance. My dad has a great retirement plan set up and in action and I even have received a scholarship through his local Union which has helped me out through my first year of college.
