The formation of stronger labor unions was a direct result of the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. Following the major strike, the 1909 Uprising of Twenty Thousand, the Triangle Factory was able to avoid joining the ILGWU, or the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union (Greenwald, 2002). They were one of very few who did not join the ILGWE at the time because they were so successful, strikes did not matter to them from a business perspective. This meant that even if the employees joined the union, it was fruitless if the business did not recognize or join as well. The workers then had to come back to work without anything changed.
In the midst of unemployment, unions gained strength. The unions could be seen as a positive impact on society because they showcased people standing up for their rights, however the truth was far from that. The strikes organized by union leaders were violent and unsafe. Protesters blocked trains, burned railcars and set buildings aflame. One man, General Nelson A. Conflicts between workers and employers are prevalent to this day. From fair wages, to better working conditions, and even to appropriate healthcare, there is always some form of questioning that needs to be addressed. Dating back to the late 1800’s the economy and labor market of the United States underwent massive changes which mainly revolved around people of all different racial and socioeconomic backgrounds becoming wage laborers. Due to these previously unheard-of changes, a conflict between the employees and employers began. Therefore, in order to resolve labor issues, through great difficulty workers created unions and protested against their employers.
“APWU [fights] for dignity and respect on the job for the workers [they] represent, as well as for decent pay and benefits and safe working conditions (www.apwu.org).” The American Postal Workers Union does just this, changing multiple lives through many different facets. Improving home life, family life, and financial situations all throughout the US; the APWU benefits many. My mom, working as a postal clerk, has been a part of the APWU for over 18 years. This juxtaposes my dad who is not a union member and lacks job stability.
The way that the Union has affected my life is by giving my father improved and safe working conditions, improving the hours they work, and giving them higher wages than non-union workers. With my dad being a part of the Union he is able to provide our family with our health insurance that is needed for our family. They also give my dad a safe place to go to work so he can come home to us after work every night. One other thing that helps me and affects me is the wages he gets from the Union without these wages we would not be able to survive or function in society. This is the most important thing that I am most thankful for the Union is that they give my father the wages that are needed to provide for our family.
The Knights of Labor and the American Federation of Labor are just two examples of labor unions. Working in such poor conditions with little pay was a harsh reality. Labor unions provided at least some hope of change for workers. A worker in Hollitz explained that the reason he went on strike from George Pullman’s “model” company was because, “five reductions in wages, work, and in conditions of employment…” The railroad strike of 1877 grew violent, as workers demanded better wages.
In the past, the treatment of workers was unfair and frequently cruel. Labor unions changed that. Pushing for better working environments, union laborers arduously fought for justice in the workplace, resulting in the passing of many laws and Federal acts protecting workers and improving life for the average working man. In an article from the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) illustrating the benefits of unions for everyday people, authors Walters and Mishel state: “Unions make a substantial and measurable difference in the implementation of labor laws.” A variety of necessary laws were passed, including child labor laws and acts granting compensation for employees injured in the workplace.
