The formation of stronger labor unions was a direct result of the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. Following the major strike, the 1909 Uprising of Twenty Thousand, the Triangle Factory was able to avoid joining the ILGWU, or the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union (Greenwald, 2002). They were one of very few who did not join the ILGWE at the time because they were so successful, strikes did not matter to them from a business perspective. This meant that even if the employees joined the union, it was fruitless if the business did not recognize or join as well. The workers then had to come back to work without anything changed.

Conflicts between workers and employers are prevalent to this day. From fair wages, to better working conditions, and even to appropriate healthcare, there is always some form of questioning that needs to be addressed. Dating back to the late 1800’s the economy and labor market of the United States underwent massive changes which mainly revolved around people of all different racial and socioeconomic backgrounds becoming wage laborers. Due to these previously unheard-of changes, a conflict between the employees and employers began. Therefore, in order to resolve labor issues, through great difficulty workers created unions and protested against their employers.
“APWU [fights] for dignity and respect on the job for the workers [they] represent, as well as for decent pay and benefits and safe working conditions (www.apwu.org).” The American Postal Workers Union does just this, changing multiple lives through many different facets. Improving home life, family life, and financial situations all throughout the US; the APWU benefits many. My mom, working as a postal clerk, has been a part of the APWU for over 18 years. This juxtaposes my dad who is not a union member and lacks job stability.
Today, the United States job market, has labor unions to protect the rights and interests of a companies employees. Unions are specifically assembled to help workers get appropriate wages and hours as well as proper working conditions. Many people today will choose to pursue a career that offers this type of advantage because it allows an employee to feel safe. For the workers of Bethlehem Steel, having a labor union, for employees, seemed crucial with their long hours. The executives, on the other hand, were extremely resistant.
The way that the Union has affected my life is by giving my father improved and safe working conditions, improving the hours they work, and giving them higher wages than non-union workers. With my dad being a part of the Union he is able to provide our family with our health insurance that is needed for our family. They also give my dad a safe place to go to work so he can come home to us after work every night. One other thing that helps me and affects me is the wages he gets from the Union without these wages we would not be able to survive or function in society. This is the most important thing that I am most thankful for the Union is that they give my father the wages that are needed to provide for our family.
The Knights of Labor and the American Federation of Labor are just two examples of labor unions. Working in such poor conditions with little pay was a harsh reality. Labor unions provided at least some hope of change for workers. A worker in Hollitz explained that the reason he went on strike from George Pullman’s “model” company was because, “five reductions in wages, work, and in conditions of employment…” The railroad strike of 1877 grew violent, as workers demanded better wages.
The Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions (FOTLU) of the US and Canada (1881) changed it’s name to American Federation of Labor in 1886. They formed because they wanted unions to be free from political groups and to be more focused on the worries of the everyday workers. The unions were made up of “craft” unions, a labor organization that brings together workers of a particular craft or trade to form a union, who were unhappy with the leaders of Knights of Labor. The Knights of Labor wanted local craft unions to exit from their international organizations and work with the Knights directly, which would help bring funds to the Knights of Labor. When I was doing my labor movement last night I came into an issue, I went to flex Ruth to Plastics and Ruth would rather go home if there was no work. The reason being for this is that she said Randy told her this would be the only debt she needed to work in due to it being climate control. This focal point can be seen in stories and poems from all over the world, throughout time. Authors in the past, who have had this as their focal point, have either snuck it in through symbolism and the reasons as to why the characters are who they are, or they place it in plain sight.
Trade unions may also provide legal advice, financial assistance, sickness benefits and education facilities to their members. Trade union membership has been decline across the industrialized market economies in recent years. Decline in membership is due to largely to common developments such as a decline in employment in traditionally manufacturing industry and the growth of service employment and increasing levels of employment. The trade union’s main aim is to protect and advance the interest of its members in the workplace.
