Right-to-work laws are legislation enacted on a per state bases that limits or eliminates compulsory unionism. The main viewpoint of right-to-work supporters is that compulsory unionism breaches inherent freedoms.

In society today technology has replaced jobs and became such a necessity for everyday life. With no limitations to technological advancements, eventually society will become completely technology based.

Robots and machines were created to make our lives easier by taking repetitive jobs off our hands and saving time. For instance electric washing machines transformed clothes cleaning from an hours-long task into something accomplished with the push of a button. Recently machines have started to take a bigger role in our lives putting some out of work. Factory and manual labor provide uneducated and unskilled workers with entry level jobs to make a living. In the past, America was promoted as the land of opportunity which brought in new people from around the world, but studies are showing a steady decrease in Immigrants today.
For over 40 years unions have been growing less dominant and shrinking. Labor unions date back to the eighteenth century, when new workers were in the need of representation. “By the 1820s, various unions involved in the effort to reduce the working day from 12 to 10 hours began to show interest in the idea of federation-of joining together in pursuit of common objectives for working people”(Jackson , 2001). When workers started to realize the powerful effects their employers have, slowly more people started to join in groups in citywide federations. As these masters gain power they assert this power by making sure the conditions of proletarians are not improved. Trade union membership worldwide has been decline due to structural factors that is smaller public sector, smaller manufacturing sector and fewer large firms. The labor market has become more volatile, with workers mobility, part time work, and lastly flexible work arrangements. Moreover, enlightened managements and mobility of capital as well as diversity of work force and workplace have reduced benefits of joining trade unions, impaired trade unions bargaining power and increased the cost of organizing. These developments have adversely affect trade union worldwide. This essay is based on the decline in trade union membership and the advantages and disadvantages of trade unions.
