The Pros And Cons Of College Athletes

At this point in my essay, the big question is why does college administrators continue to enroll the highly recruited athlete-students in their institutions of higher learning knowing their education shortcomings. The answer to the question is lots of money. From 2012 to the present, NCAA annual revenue is estimated over $800 million dollars (NCAA n.p.). The African-American athlete-student generates millions of dollars in sales for colleges that use their name, image and likeness; therefore, these so called “blue chips” athlete are highly recruit by colleges’ athletic programs as early as middle schools (Bateman 796). As a result, these programs are highly recognized because of African-American male athletes’ excellence in sports, which brings a great deal of prestige to their athletic programs (Bateman 793). Moreover, college athlete-students coming into the recruiting process understands that colleges’ athletic programs are purchasing their “athletic prowess”, not their academic proficiency or endeavors (Bateman 796). Angela Davis’ quote regarding black bodies will be forever etched in my mind that “Black bodies are considered dispensable within the “free world” but as a major source of profit…..” (Davis 95). The bottom-line, college administrators, coaches, athlete-students and parents have two goals, to win games and be drafted by the professional leagues. Regrettably, for many of these athletes at the end of their college careers the realization that they are not part of the one percent transitioning to the professional leagues results in devastation. Now these athletes have to deal with the rigors of the real life totally unprepared. Conversely, Hawkins, expresses the recruitment of more high-achieving African-American male athletes would improve the academic legitimacy and improve the overall image of colleges’ athletic programs
