The second suggestion of additional detoxification beds is again a great idea. Most detoxification centers are a short term intensive residential facility. These facilities focus on the heavy users and utilize treatments such as hypnosis, aversion therapy, counseling, biofeedback, and other methods. Each year over 130,000 adolescents between the ages of 12-17 are sent to such treatment facilities (Welsh). Over half of them are forced to go by a juvenile court judge, and are usually not committed to the treatment. So looking at these programs, it is easy to see all the potential for positive outcomes, however, knowing that each year 130,000 youth are sent, leads me to believe that these programs do not work. Starting with the “just say no” campaign, moving along to Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), and now on to Project ALERT (Welsh). Each of these programs has had a surprising success rate in teaching children to avoid peer pressure as well as the cause and effects of drugs and alcohol. Along with school programs, the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign has had a surprisingly positive effect, with 41 percent of adolescents in grades 7-12 stating that the ads made them less likely to experiment with drugs (Welsh). We need to provide the adolescents alternative activities to take their minds off troubles at home, stress, and so on. By providing after school activities, we can provide them with a sense of belonging while teaching them skills to ensure their success in school, employment, and relationships (Welsh). As previously mentioned, the peer pressure, family environment, and need to feel accepted is a huge contributor in adolescent drug abuse. Therefore to beat it, we need to meet these specific needs. The second portion of the community aspect would in fact be a community treatment centers. These centers would provide parents with the resources and counseling required to correct the negative situations at home. These centers will also have social workers and investigators to assist in removing the children from unsafe situations at home if the parents choose not to seek help.
