Statistically 3 in 10 women report being either physically assaulted or have experienced violent behavior from an intimate partner. In order to put this ratio into perspective approximately 1.3 million women have been abused by their intimate partners worldwide (National Violence against Women Survey). This is a shocking yet notable statistic that legitimizes the plight of Domestic Violence (DV) victims. Domestic Violence is traditionally recognized as any pattern of abuse inflicted on the victim by spouses, family and other intimate partners. Domestic violence can take on several forms such as physical, verbal, emotional, economic and sexual abuse, which can range from subtle, forceful forms to outright martial rape.

Criticism for these programs can range from the issue of fiscal responsibility to the manner in which funds are allocated. There have been many reports of the neglecting of certain organizations which have filed for grants towards assistance programs. Instead of being allocated the aide they need, such organizations must apply for other facets of federal funding due to its lack of tenure. Although some effort has been made to distribute funds to reach the high-need areas and to address specific inadequacies, the funding process currently favors existing organizations. The issue of mental illness has always been foreshadowed by other looming problems, but it can be the most destructive factor in an individual’s life.
