On November 9th, 2016, America woke up, shocked, to find that the next president of the United States would be Donald J. Trump. Many Americans were not only shocked that he won, but shocked that he won by an absolute landslide in the electoral college. Donald Trump managed to defeat Hillary Clinton, a supposed shoe-in for the position, 306 electoral votes to Clinton’s 232 votes (Politico). In close elections, a candidate typically beats his opponent by one state, but this was a landslide victory. Although there are protests and riots throughout the nation and thousands upon thousands of people wondering how this could happen, there is a very clear and obvious explanation. In 2012 Princeton Survey Research Associates conducted a study and found that “effect on their financial well-being.” (Los Angeles Times) was typically the most important thing in the minds of voters. Clinton assumed that nobody could possibly vote for a candidate which was recording saying “grab them by the pussy”(The Intercept), and that she was, morally, a shoe-in for the election. But it turned out that when thousands of people went to the polls on November 8th, people decided that it didn’t matter that Trump said “grab them by the pussy” and other things as long as he was dedicated to helping them get jobs and the other candidate wasn’t.
