It has happened only five times in our nation's history where the president of the United States has won the electoral vote and lost the popular vote, and one of those times was in 2000. Florida was the deciding factor at the end of the election night, but it didn’t end at election night. The next president was not decided for another couple weeks and the case went to Supreme Court. Bush ended up winning and changing many economic and educational aspects of our country and this election also changed the way voting was being conducted in some counties. Bush won by a such small percentage of electoral votes, it was not the only time it has occurred. In 1960, for example, Democrat John F. Kennedy beat Republican Richard M. Nixon 303 to 219 electoral votes (“United States Presidential Election of 1960”). Voting irregularities in Illinois and Texas caused many people to question whether Kennedy had actually won the states and even urged Nixon to contest the votes, but he did not, in order to keep the country united (“United States Presidential Election of 1960”). This relates to the 2000 election in many ways. Many U.S. citizens were not pleased of how the voting in Florida was handled. Even though Gore held off on his concession longer than Nixon did in 1960, Gore still supported the Supreme Court's decision of Bush being president. Gore could have fought against that ruling, but instead he did not so that the nation stayed together. That is exactly what Nixon did too stating, “I could think of no worse example for nations abroad, who for the first time were trying to put free electoral procedures into effect, than that of the United States wrangling over the results of our presidential election, and even suggesting that the presidency itself could be stolen by thievery at the ballot box” (“United States Presidential Election of
